Welcome to Planning a Scientific Presentation: From Stickies to Slides

The class would serve a useful guide on how and where you can start planning for your scientific presentation, design captivating slides and then, go beyond the traditional way of publicising your research.

This class is for you if:

  • you are a postgraduate, research student, or final year students doing research – and wish to prepare for a viva or proposal defence.
  • you are a young aspiring researcher or scientist who might have some publications or manuscripts and plan to going to present your work at meetings and conferences in the near future. And… plan to go beyond that.

The course is divided into 3 parts: Planning, Design and Create a Video Presentation

1. Planning. Map Out Your Presentation.

In the first part, you will learn 2 approaches in planning a scientific presentation.

a. The first approach:
starts from a text outline to stickies and finally showing my process in micro-planning a slide deck of a scientific presentation. This approach would benefit young research students who are looking for a step-by-step guide in planning out a presentation.

The micro-planning approach would also help you process your thoughts, set things clearer which in turn facilitates in bringing out the essence of your work.

Once those thoughts are crystallised, you will find it’s much easier to plan and design a compelling scientific presentation.

b. The second approach:
you will learn my process i.e. how to select texts from a manuscript to prepare a slide. Learn how I paraphrase a paragraph. It’s a short-cut approach to preparing a scientific presentation – but it demands you to really know your work, inside out.

2. Design. Elevate Your Scientific Presentation.

In this part of the course, you will learn how to design captivating academic slide by combining text, visual and colours. Watch the time lapse video tutorial on how I paraphrase some text from my manuscript and then design it into a PowerPoint slide.

I also share my formula and top design tips on creating slides that will elevate your scientific presentation.

3. Create A Video Presentation. Publicise Your Research!

Reach out to the industry players, funding agencies and peers by sharing your research findings. Create and share video presentations of your research. Engage your potential funders with your video presentations.

In this class, you will learn 4 easy ways for rapid video creation. No need to create an entirely new PowerPoint or learn fancy tech tools. Simply turn your existing PowerPoint into a video presentation in minutes and publicise your research!

I am guided by Presentation Zen approach, thus leaning towards creating clean and minimalist designs in presentation slides. This approach helps one to focus on designing and presenting the core message of one’s work, the science, and do away any distractions.
