Designing Effective Presentation for Young Academics

8.8.2018 What a nice number.

Last Friday I was invited to give a sharing session on Designing Effective Presentation for Young Academics at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). It was at a 2-week teaching and learning programme for young academics. Earlier they had sessions on Malaysia education philosophy, OBE, SCL, micro-teaching, assessment and communication skills.

An afternoon session, 2.30-4.30 pm, on a Friday is always a very challenging one for any presenter. How does one keep the attention ‘steady’, when their thoughts would tend to wander off to the weekends and what to do to wind down for the week. I was also mindful of that these young academics already had a full week with activities from 9-5 every day. Indeed a very hectic week for them. So a Friday is time to wind down…

Well, I didn’t let the young academics go off so easy ;-)…

I designed the session with the end in mind. Each group would present their reflections of the week–a  way to conclude the week and to look forward to the second week of the programme. They were asked apply what they’ve learned from my session by designing and deliverying a group presentation with the most current presentation apps. The use of Powerpoint was highly discouraged. And of course, I included a couple of incentives.

In my session, I share 10 tips and lessons for the young academics to use, starting with the power of a pause. I also shared 3 takeaways as shown below by Dr Kien Tsong Chau:

And… it was so wonderful to see the young academics put in their best effort into the presentation. The scenario around the session is as below:

This is my first blog post since May. Roughly three months ago. Lots of things had happened and will update the blog soon.
